The STI has never come in automatic. It is a driver's car, so it is not appropriate. You should be ashamed of yourself for even asking. The WRX does come with a .

A great advertising solution to get high quality customers. Used Subaru Impreza 2. See all the latest Subaru reviews, news and video. Hot Subaru saloon is back - just make sure you buy the manual version. It appears to be a stop-gap measure as Subaru has simply raided its parts bin rather than design an all-new gearbox; the five-speed auto is the same transmission used in its large softroader, the Tribeca.

The STi is fast, grippy and offers immense value, maintaining an image Subaru has cultivated through years of rally pedigree. The Japanese maker has been a bit hit-and-miss with its car designs over the past decade and is trying to find its mojo again by giving the WRX STI saloon the same bulging flanks and wide footprint as the hatchback. A rear wing so large that it doubles as a picnic table is back, too, although the jury is out on its overall aesthetic appeal. The new saloon was unveiled at the New York motor show earlier this year and has just gone on sale Down Under ahead of its British debut later this year or at the beginning of next year.

Australians got an early taste because they seem to have a soft spot for the idiosyncratic brand; per capita more new Subarus are sold in Australia than any other country.

The other big news to go with the arrival of the wide body sedan is the option of an automatic transmission — a first for the WRX STI. It appears to be a stop-gap measure as Subaru has simply raided its parts bin rather than design an all-new gearbox; the five-speed auto is the same transmission used in its large softroader, the Tribeca. Against the stopwatch, the auto is almost a full one second slower in the 0 to 62mph dash than the manual, completing the task in a rather leisurely six seconds neat.

The automatic shifts are quite smooth, and as with its peers the WRX STI auto comes with a nice pair of levers behind the steering wheel so you can select gears manually. Thankfully, the manual still offers blistering performance and the wider body means the sedan gets the wider track for better cornering grip. Subaru has also used the opportunity to update the suspension tuning; the new model is more compliant over ruts in the road than its predecessor.

And while there is still plenty of road roar that is typical of Japanese performance cars, it is muted slightly by some extra sound deadening material. The high performance Brembo brakes are as good as ever, able to cope with whatever repeated punishment is dished out to them, but they still have a slightly too-firm, wooden feeling for my liking. Hopefully, customers in Great Britain will have more sense and opt for the manual.

There was an auto option on the first wrx's too maybe japan only - they seem quite popular though i personally dont see the appeal in a car like this with an auto box. The underlying problem is still that this is 's idea of a great car. As the main point of this article is that a saloon has been introduced its a shame there are no proper pics of the rear.

No, it's a blessing. I saw one of these at my dealer the other week and it's just hideous. The saloon version of the regular WRX has been available here in the States since the model switch for However bad the new hatchback may look trust me, the saloon is worse. While it's no Pininfarina, it's the best looking of the recent WRX variants. Don't know about that. There's nothing to touch the hatchback as an all-rounder. Anything that's better than my hatchback in one way is worse than it in several others.

At last the saloon, no matter if it does look hideous from the rear at least the shape of the thing is now right!! I'm not entirely sure what the point of offering it as an auto is though? Surely if you wanted a auto Subaru you'd do what I did and buy a Legacy instead??

Hot Subaru saloon is back - just make sure you buy the manual version. It was unveiled at the New York motor show and is now on sale in Australia It now has the option of an automatic gearbox But it's a conventional five-speed torque converter Power is the same with both transmissions at bhp The new car is more compliant than its predecessor over road ruts The high performance brakes are as good as ever Automatic changes are quite smooth, but manual ones are slow and blurry.
