Aside from saving the once-languishing Legacy line from potential oblivion, the Outback variant continues to pique the interest of potential buyers who had never before even considered a Subaru product. Expect that saga to take a new and even better turn this summer, when the second-generation Outback wagon-and its equally new sedan variant, the Legacy SUS-start rolling off the production line of the SIA plant in Lafayette, Indiana, and into local dealers.

Already marketed in Japan-albeit with minor bodywork variations-this latest Outback handsomely expands on the basic go-almost-anywhere-in-comfort-and-style theme of the original. Improved amenities, better handling, greater structural integrity, and enhanced safety were all part of its comprehensive redesign brief given to the engineering team led by Matsaru Katsurada. And our early encounters, which took place with several late pilot-build vehicles at the company's proving ground in Japan, and here in the U.

On-road and off, this new Subaru proved eminently capable, highly utile, and even more user-friendly than before. At the heart of this Gen II Legacy is a unibody that boasts percent more bending rigidity and 20 percent greater torsional stiffness. A massively reinforced passenger cell also provides more resistance to front, rear, side, and offset crashes, although curb weight is up by some pounds.

The exterior styling retains the basic flavor of its predecessor, but bolder lines and better-integrated details give this all-season sportabout a more contemporary flair and help trim its coefficient of drag to 0. Pronounced shoulder ridges and a "wedgier" shape add new character, while narrower pillars and a revamped greenhouse improve driver sight lines in all directions. Like its sheetmetal, the Outback's suspension is a blend of familiar and all-new. Up front, there's a tweaked version of the MacPherson-strut underpinnings used before.

In the rear, a smaller, lighter, and subframe-mounted multilink setup replaces the previous coil-spring struts and lateral links, improving both space utilization and NVH characteristics. This new hardware also better restricts unwanted camber and toe changes to enhance overall handling. Revamped variable-assist rack-and-pinion power steering provides added driver feedback and requires less operating energy.

Stopping chores are ably handled by four-wheel disc brakes. Paired with standard ABS, they brought our tester from mph in feet. Powering the new Outback is the latest generation of Subaru's classic all-aluminum flat four.

The aforementioned transformation netted a host of neat techno touches that collectively helped fatten the torque curve across the board, bolster top-end performance, and trim noise and vibration levels, while improving fuel efficiency and lowering emissions. It can be paired with either a standard five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic transmission, both significantly revised for this application. The all-new autoshifter is the biggest news here. Smaller and lighter than the unit it replaces, it boasts smoother changes, less internal friction, and a lower lockup speed as key operating gains.

Outbacks will be percent all-wheel drive. Autoshifted versions will be fitted with Subaru's Active Torque Split system; manual models, a viscous-coupled limited-slip center differential. With barely miles on its odometer, our prototype four-speed automatic tester needed Inside, this new Outback com bines a familiar feel with greater style and improved ergonomics.

A comprehensive redo-along with modest stretches in wheelbase and overall width-nets tangible gains in head, leg, and shoulder room. Those upticks plus more-supportive seats make it an even better long-distance cruiser. Mounting far lower in the unibody, the Outback's new rear suspension brings an additional 5.
