Never mind the sporty-ish Lexus IS sedan or the plush, comfy LS flagship -- the RX is the Japanese automakers' best-selling model and, one imagines, a vehicle with a healthy per-unit profit margin. That Lexus would produce a hybrid version to meet both mandated fuel-economy standards and the green notions of its buyers is hardly surprising, and if anyone should be able to nail the fuel-saving tech, it's the company whose parent is responsible for the Prius.

So it's not entirely surprising that, where the hybrid powertrain is concerned, the Lexus RX h delivers. My stop-and-go commute didn't provide me with any highway driving so I can't speak to how the engine performed at higher speeds. I didn't mind the feel of the regenerative braking.

Challenging yourself to recapture as much energy as possible is one of the few areas where you can amuse yourself in run-of-the mill hybrids. But the regen brake feel does work against the smoothness of acceleration.

Still, for an estimated 29 mpg combined -- we may have done even better during our time driving it -- I can see many drivers happily embracing the braking tech. Where the RX h or at least an RX h optioned the way our tester was fell short was the interior -- specifically, the lack of standard features.

Sitting in the vehicle for the first time, I popped the gear selector into reverse and waited for the rearview camera to kick in. Except, there was no rearview camera to kick in. Or even a color screen on the center console. In its place was a simple LCD that one could find on decade-plus old used Lexus models.

Seats felt old as well -- only they felt old as in flat and worn out, not old as in outdated. You'll have to run the numbers and figure out if you're willing to sacrifice the sort of electronics that practically come standard on Kias these days in order to put your eco-conscience at ease.

I don't think many, but still it's informative to get into a vehicle from a luxury automaker that isn't packed with a Toyota Yaris' worth of options on it. In our particular Lexus RX h, we don't have navigation or even a color central screen and there is no mouse-like controller on the center console. It's basic for a Lexus. I will say that the center screen that is there telling you basic information like time and outside temperature looks very out of place in a Lexus.

The black block text reminds me of the old Casio digital watch I had years ago. I will have to agree with Graham that the interior is a letdown overall, and not because it doesn't have all the tech features.

The materials are average and the front bucket seats aren't comfortable and supportive. As for the hybrid drivetrain, it's certainly been improved over the years from a smoothness point of view with the engine cutting in and out much more seamlessly than in the past. My biggest beef with hybrids remains how the regenerative brakes feel under braking and this RX h still offers a brake feeling that isn't the most comforting.
