My alternator died a few days ago during a downpour. I shut off all of the electrical equipment to make it home. Interesting that the tranny won't shift when the battery gets low. The alt would have to be ordered if I wnated to buy it from the dealer. I managed to get it out from the top without disconnecting the top radiator hose, just loosen it and pull it back to make a bit more room to wiggle the alt out.

I believe it is time to replace either my alternator or regulator as the voltage output starts out around Even revving it at the start of the day the voltage never seems to go much higher than Hind site when the battery went out a few years ago the car turned over pretty quick with the new battery. So I think this issue has been present for some time. Minimal risk of leaking fittings afterwards? Or based on the amount of effort just replace the entire alternator and be done with it?

The car is a V70 GLT. I've changed the serpentine belt once before and getting it back on sure can be tricky. I was fully convinced I had a wrong serpentine belt last time because it just seemed short.

Then the earth, moon and sun aligned just right and it squeaked in. I was thinking of trying to replace my voltage regulator and brushes without removing alternator.

There seems to be enough room in the S80 anyways. Only thing behind it is the oil dipstick tube. Haynes manual basically has same procedure you used though. The regulator was bad. They replaced the regulator, brushes, and tested it with a 6 month warr. It took my about 2 hours to take it out and 1. The pictures for the V70 were almost the same as the S I'd like to know where those guys buy their voltage regulators.

Then again, don't think I'd want to skimp and use a Chinese made one and fry an expensive Volvo module. If I don't have to remove alternator should take 15 minutes to replace myself.

Yes I just used regular tools. This was small enough to fit thru the PS pulley and not have it hit computer box. Also get a small can or plastic bottle to put under the resevoir hose before you pull off the hose and metal tubing that connect to the PS pump.

It does sould like your regulator is on it's way out, it should be putting out at least This old junk yard alt reads You should be able to remove the regulator without taking the alt out, just make sure you disconnect the battery first I'm sure you know that. However it one or more of the diodes that are in the alt a new regulator won't help. After you remove the regulator you can see the 6 diodes. A rebuild shop can probably replace them if bad, maybe?? If I remember correctly the regulator said Bosch on it.

The rebuild houses probably get a quantity discount from the local distributers. I've been looking for a manual for a while, the autoparts store never has one '01 S60 and '02 V70 , guess I'll look online for the Haynes.
